Spring Break in Washington DC & Baltimore

April 19, 2026 7 min read Rishika

• Cherry Blossoms  • Free Museums  • Junior Rangers  • Water Taxis  • Giant Pandas

Spring break was calling… and we answered with road trips, cherry blossoms, dinosaur fossils, and a Junior Ranger badge earned with full kid seriousness. Washington DC is one of the most family-friendly cities in the world: free world-class museums, wide open spaces, and enough American history to keep curious minds buzzing. Add Baltimore just 40 minutes away, and you have a complete two-city adventure: iconic landmarks, waterfront boat rides, and a fort where the Star-Spangled Banner was born.

Spring is absolutely the best time to visit. Cherry blossoms, tulips, and mild weather make every outdoor moment feel magical. Here’s everything you need to know to pull off this trip with your family.

Day 1: Museums, Museums, Museums (And They’re FREE)

Air and Space Museum

Our first stop was the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, and we went in with a plan: a free guided tour. The guides walked us through the major exhibits — rockets, spacecraft, aviation history — before setting us loose to explore on our own. It was the perfect way to orient the kids so they understood what they were looking at.

📌 Important Tips:

  • Register your free timed-entry pass in advance on the Smithsonian website

  • Book at least 1 day prior — spots fill fast during spring break
  • Parking: Street parking available at both the front and back of the museum (metered)

Natural History Museum

We walked over to the Natural History Museum next, and honestly? It might have been the highlight of Day 1. The kids got so excited when they saw the giant dinosaur and mammoth skeletons, before erupting into total chaos. The crystals and gems section was absolutely phenomenal and worth slowing down for.

Highlights for kids:

  • Huge skeletons that make jaws drop
  • Museum guides stationed throughout, explaining fossils at kid level
  • Interactive visual screens packed with information
  • The crystals and gems section is phenomenal and not to be missed

Day 2: Cherry Blossoms, the Zoo & the White House

Tidal Basin

If you visit DC in spring and miss the Tidal Basin, you’ve missed the whole point. We found the cherry blossoms in full bloom and rows of tulips that made for incredible photos. It was one of those moments where you stop and just soak it all in.

  • Go early — it gets very crowded by mid-morning
  • Check peak bloom dates before your trip (usually late March to mid April)
  • Metered street parking available nearby
  • Pro tip: Walk from the Tidal Basin to the White House (~20 minutes on foot). You’ll pass right by the Washington Monument, a perfect spontaneous landmark moment.

The National Zoo

The National Zoo is enormous and the giant pandas are absolutely the highlight. Give yourself a full day if you can, or pick your favorite exhibits in advance so you don’t end up walking in circles. There are food stalls and ice cream stands, essential for keeping the energy up.

  • Register your free entry spot in advance on the Smithsonian website (same as Air & Space) Register for passes
  • Zoo has its own parking which you have to reserve prior to going. Free and metered street parking available nearby

Baltimore: Waterfront, History & Harbor Fun

Baltimore is only about 40 minutes from DC and makes for an easy day trip — or even an overnight stay. We hit five spots and every single one delivered.

Fells Point & the Water Taxi

We started in the historic Fells Point neighborhood and hopped on the free public water taxi across the harbor. The kids absolutely loved the boat ride — it was one of those simple experiences that turns into a trip highlight.

  • Food pick: Pie in the Sky restaurant — great pizza, kid-approved
  • The water taxi is free and runs between Fells Point and to many locations in Baltimore. We did Fells Point to Locust Point run and then back.

Federal Hill Park

Federal Hill Park sits at the top of a hill with sweeping harbor views and a harbor-themed playground that the kids had a blast on. It’s a great place to let them run while you take in the scenery. Thrilling views!!

  • Heads up: There are a lot of steps to get to the top — worth it, but prepare little legs!

Fort McHenry — The Star-Spangled Banner

Fort McHenry was the absolute highlight of Baltimore. This is where the Star-Spangled Banner was written — and it’s brought to life here in the most engaging way. The informational video at the visitor center is genuinely fascinating for adults and kids alike.

What the kids loved:

  • Participating in the flag ceremony — a memorable, patriotic moment
  • Completing the Junior Ranger booklet and earning a real badge
  • Beautiful cherry blossoms and ocean views throughout the grounds
  • We did a picnic under the cherry blossom trees — highly recommend

Where We Stayed: Hotel Recommendations

Choosing the right hotel can make or break a family trip, and we found two great options that worked really well for us at different points of the trip.

Tru by Hilton Baltimore Harbor East

411 S Central Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21202

This one was a standout. Tru by Hilton has a vibrant, modern personality — it’s bright, colorful, and full of energy in a way that kids respond to immediately. And the location? Practically perfect. You’re right in the heart of Fells Point and a short walk from the Inner Harbor, which means you can step outside and be in the middle of everything Baltimore has to offer.

  • Vibrant, fun-themed design — kids love the atmosphere
  • Perfectly located between Fells Point and the Inner Harbor
  • Walking distance to the water taxi, restaurants, and Federal Hill Park
  • Great base for exploring all of Baltimore’s waterfront attractions

Embassy Suites by Hilton Baltimore at BWI Airport

1300 Concourse Drive, Linthicum, MD 21090

If you’re traveling with kids, Embassy Suites is honestly one of the smartest choices you can make. The suite layout is a game-changer for family travel: everyone gets their own space. Kids can watch their shows in the living area while the adults decompress in the bedroom — and nobody has to go to sleep at 8pm just because the kids do. We loved it.

  • Spacious suites with separate living and sleeping areas — a must with kids
  • Evening snacks provided — a lovely bonus after long days of sightseeing
  • Very family-friendly atmosphere and amenities throughout
  • Convenient location near BWI Airport — easy access to both DC and Baltimore
  • Pro tip: Suite hotels are worth every penny when traveling with kids. Having separate entertainment and sleeping spaces means the whole family actually rests and recharges for the next day’s adventures.

Travel Essentials

Baby Trend Sit N’ Stand Convertible Multi-Use Easy Fold Travel Toddler & Baby Tandem Double Stroller

Traveling with kids, especially more than one, can quickly become overwhelming, and having the right stroller makes a huge difference. This is basically a life saver for us.

Final Thoughts

This trip was one of those rare travel experiences where everything clicked: the kids were engaged, the history was alive, the cherry blossoms were peak perfect, and we came home with a Junior Ranger badge and a whole lot of memories.

Washington DC and Baltimore are genuinely two of the best family destinations in the US. The combination of free world-class museums, outdoor landmarks, and accessible history makes it a trip that works for all ages — from toddlers staring at dinosaur bones to adults getting genuinely emotional at Fort McHenry.
