Taughannock Falls 215-foot waterfall in Trumansburg New York Finger Lakes
If you’ve been to Niagara Falls and thought you’d checked off your bucket list, think again. Tucked into the rolling hills of the Finger Lakes, Taughannock Falls State Park is home to a waterfall that stands 215 feet tall — taller than Niagara — and delivers one of the most jaw-dropping, oddly peaceful waterfall experiences in the entire Northeast.
We visited as a family, and I still can’t stop thinking about it. The kids said it felt like being transported to another planet. They weren’t wrong!

Hiking Trails at Taughannock Falls
The trail system here is manageable for most ages and fitness levels, which made it perfect for us as a family. There are three main options, and together they offer a full picture of this stunning gorge.
Gorge Trail — The Must-Do
Gorge Trail Easy 1.5 miles round-trip 30–60 minutes A nearly level, wide gravel path that follows the creek 0.75 miles straight to the base of the falls. Accessible for strollers and little legs alike. As you walk deeper into the gorge, the shale walls rise dramatically on either side — my daughter said it felt like walking into a different world. When the full height of the falls finally comes into view, everyone in our group went silent. That moment alone is worth the trip.

North Rim Trail — Views From Above
North Rim Trail Moderate 1.5 miles A more rugged trail running along the top of the gorge, offering sweeping panoramic views down into the gorge and across the landscape. A great option for anyone looking for a bit more of a workout with a big payoff.
South Rim Trail — Complete the Loop
South Rim Trail Moderate Scenic loop option Running along the opposite side of the gorge from the North Rim, this trail can be combined with the North Rim for a full loop that gives you multiple perspectives of the gorge and the surrounding Finger Lakes scenery.

Final Thoughts
Taughannock Falls isn’t a hidden gem so much as an underappreciated one. It’s accessible, affordable at just $10 a vehicle, genuinely stunning, and surrounded by some of the best scenery New York has to offer. Whether you’re hiking to the base with little ones, doing the rim loop solo, or just pulling over at the overlook for ten minutes on a road trip — it earns every minute you give it.
The kids are still talking about feeling like they were on another planet, walking between those towering gorge walls toward a waterfall that seems too big to be real. That feeling is exactly why we travel.
Go. Seriously.
